I am still engrossed in this series and will continue on. I have one small criticism. I think that this book and the "Dead: Winter" book might have been combined into one "Winter" book. The story still finds the survivors in the deadly grip of winter and still more well established characters are eliminated. The leader of one of the groups, for the second time, has found that those he is trying to protect have been taken prisoner by another faction. In this case a woman and military leader of a small group of military leftovers. So, once again, he sets out on a mission with a female guerrilla fighter helpmate to save them. Another group leader realizes that his mountain refuge is about to be overrun by the undead and so bugs out with supplies, his daughter and a few others, leaving the rest of the uninformed group to their fate (humanity at its best). Yet another small group of military has turned to total ruthless control of the local civilian population and a few survivors decide to go AWOL from this "community" just prior to an undead horde rolling over it. After losing many good people on a supply run, still another group leader has a positive surprise on a last ditch search for a missing girl. In a couple of other areas of the world a self-proclaimed Egyptian Pharaoh may soon find himself alone on a ship of the dead and a plucky British matron and her girl sidekick press on to zombie occupied London searching for something important that has yet to be revealed. Of more interest is the continued odd behavior of the zombie-children. And, the leader of one of the more successful survivor holdouts may have just made the biggest mistake of his life by allowing a turned child from his own group to go free. Plus, inevitably cannibalism has reared its awful head proving once again humanity has more to fear from itself than the walking undead.

DEAD Siege Survival Volume 5 TW Brown 9781936730735 Books Reviews

Winter continues (and no, there are no appearances by the Starks of Winterfell) in this entry in the series and I definitely began to feel like the characters as I worked my through this one is winter EVER going to end? I had a little trouble getting through this one as the progression of the story felt like it was getting bogged down in the doldrums of winter. However, there is still plenty of action and new developments to keep fans of the series interested and excited for what's to come! And more of that strange behavior from a certain type of zombie keeps popping up in this one. I can't wait to (hopefully, fingers crossed) find out why this is occurring!

I applaud TW Brown for the tragic ending to this book, which is what really keeps me so excited about Dead. Not a lot of authors have the guts to approach such a development when we all know it would be the harshest of realities in such a scenario.
My partner and I are completely hooked on TW Brown's series of zombie novels. Season 5 sees disparate groups of human survivors plunge into new adventures which follow twin parallel arcs escape from the undead and play social games within their respective groups. This stanza is takes the form of a linking phase in the grander story arc since there are relatively few new ideas or twists present.

Having started at Book One, I can say that Brown has continued with his established formula which places in-depth character development at a modest discount and culls dead-end characters with easy convenience. (Ooops! Don't like you any more...you suddenly get a busted leg...sorry...gotta slot ya...and get m'self outta Dodge. Bye!)

Easily the most interesting people are the feral humans who, like criminals everywhere, seem to have a more broader intelligence than those wearing white hats. The good guys spend their time running around with their hair fire sorting out everyone's crash-loading problems (especially Superman Steve) whilst the baddies are way more mission focused. Hint to Steve organize a management team and delegate ruthlessly...and tell the next person who runs up to you and says You need to see this! "breathlessly" to sort it out themselves, you ain't some problem post office.

Some of the episodes in this book are on the high side of You Gotta Be Kidding! incredible (a house serendipitously packed with weapons and survivor goodies...tight like a tigah!) and there are a sprinkling of odd typos and funny mis-cues (e.g.) "panty waste" in lieu of panty waist.

Summing up All good tongue-in-cheek popcorn reading that's well up the food chain relative to the run of the mill ordinariness characterizing this genre...TW Brown's Dead series has few close competitors that high on the tree, Bravo!
This series is never boring. Each book delves deeper into the decisions every survivor must make. They all have to figure out what they are willing to do to stay alive. Is their own survival more important than anyone else's? Will they sacrifice themselves or sacrifice everyone else?
While both Steve and Kevin believe they have the best plans to keep their groups alive, their budding god complexes are hitting a very hard Reality wall. They are starting to realize that only about half their decisions are the right ones, and the wrong moves are literally biting back at their loved ones. While a lot of their angst is well written and understandable, at their core, neither trusts anyone else enough to give up any real control. The end of the book underscores their messianic and masochistic tendencies.
Aaheru is turning himself into a combination of god and Hitler and I can't wait to see him put down, really hard. Juan and his group need to have their own book. How about "Tight Like A Tigah"? Some humor would be appreciated about now. It would be a nice change-up to have Kevin and Steve as vignettes and let the other groups take center stage. I enjoy this series of books and hope to read many more of them.
