"With Tooth and Claw" would probably be categorized as extreme horror, perhaps even splattergore. The seven macabre tales in this collection are that and more. Author Jim Goforth is a practiced hand at turning out intense works of horror/fantasy, and he weaves the creation of compelling, sympathetic characters into his stories. He is the ultimate "show it, don't tell it" kind of writer: not a word is wasted, and you get to know the characters by their dialog and interactions. And the stories themselves are great! My two favorite are Dead Tree Creepers and the novella Cavedwellers, which I consider to be a horror masterpiece. Goforth is at his best when spinning a horrifying yarn among hikers around a campfire. Dead Tree Creepers starts out as a contest among the campers as to who can tell the most frightening tale. Of course there are a couple of lame ones - Goforth does a wonderful job matching the quality of the respective stories to the personalities of the raconteurs. Vincent is kind of weird, as is his story - weird and terrifying. And it turns out to be true- and deadly dangerous to the group. Sexual innuendos and tensions among the campers enliven the story and make it a joy to read. Cavedwellers takes the premise of hideous threats to the hikers to a whole new level. For much of the story we are thinking that the threat springs from two vengeful sexual deviants in the group who have been spurned by the lovely Megan and her new boyfriend Josh, but when the action moves to the underground caverns of MacGinnis Mountain we discover that there is a much more perilous, supernatural danger hanging over the heads of all the hikers. The sexual attraction between Megan and Josh is beautifully consummated in this story, and I found myself really liking both of them and hoping they escape from the steadily mounting evil. The final horror is cataclysmic and utterly unique. I dare any enthusiast of extreme horror to put this one down! The Living Ink deals with a disliked and bullied young man whose intense tattoos turn out to be far more than merely ornamental. In Stripped to the Bone, shallow, abusive strip show addict Stu Edgeworth gets what's coming to him when he visits the Styx: a strip club that turns out to be hellish indeed! In Apocalypticism war deserter John Eide brings back a contagion with him that he caught during jungle warfare, and the city erupts into a zombie apocalypse. Sadly, serial killer Thomas Moonfog seeks to perform the one good deed of his predatory life by rescuing two abandoned children from the inferno. Only the little girl Shiva has had a bite taken out of her arm . . . In Astraal's Hand, two underworld figures steal the severed hands of a powerful shaman from a pretty museum agent, whom they kidnap and tie up nearly naked in the bed of a house. They lure two youths to the house to steal the hands, which are contained in a brown paper bag. Their real goal is to use the young men to cover the tracks of their own crime, meaning to burn down the house with three dead bodies inside and abscond with the hands themselves. But the Hands of Astraal have different ideas . . .In Incubus, a psychic has terrible nightmares of a monstrous creature horribly murdering young women, which the morning news invariably verifies actually happened every time. In her most recent dream the young female victim is herself . . . I hope these brief teasers give some indication of the variety and intensity of the seven stories in this collection. If you love a good supernatural horror story with plenty of suspense, believable, likeable characters, interludes of hot sex, and more gore than you'll find in a good sized butcher shop, then "With Tooth and Claw" is definitely for you! Even better yet for me, Goforth's 600-page "Plebs" awaits on my coffee table!

What a great collection of nasty tales from Jim Goforth. The book starts off strongly with a gruesome tale in the woods, where some strange and hungry tree dwellers lurk patiently waiting for some tasty young morsels to feast upon. We have a great tale about a burglary that turns into a fight for a parcel that contains two hands! and a cracker of a tale set in a cave in the mountains. The final story was the longest (novella length) and was terrific in the way it kept you guessing before the bloody conclusion. Top draw, highly recommended horror reading. 5 stars.
Jim Goforth did it again! Seven stellar stories from a stellar author! If you crave gore, action, and flat out horror, this book has it all! I highly recommend it for the not-so-faint-of-heart.
This is my first time reading this author and I am impressed all of the stories had a life of their own and the endings were no expected I loved all the stories and this book is a must read. Please be advised there are no weapons here !
My first read from this author. I am a big fan of extreme horror, and this did not disappoint. I don't like putting spoilers in my reviews fyi. This is a series of short and not as short stories. The author has a way of showing that things are not as they seem. From campers light heartedly telling tales, a couple of petty crooks, a soldier who went awol, a mountain? What could possibly go wrong? Jim Goforth will show you, the author has an amazing way with words.
This is a great collection of short stories. Jim Goforth has done it again. I always enjoy reading his work, he is fabulous.
I am not going to go into detail about the stories, as there would be too many spoilers. Just know that they will make the gooseflesh stand up and make you look about in the dark while reading.
5 out of 5 stars! Highly recommended.

I’m a huge fan of this genre. I watch horror movies and read horror books. Because I’m such a fan, I tend to be critical of a story that is not horrific enough, or engaging my mind. Horror is all about being swept up in the moment, and feeling your heart pump with fear. Unfortunately some stories in this genre just don’t make the cut.
I am so glad to say that, Jim Goforth does not fail to deliver exactly what I look for in horror. He injects great character dialogues, making me feel as though I am part of the cast. He is a master of suspense, atmosphere, and for baring the characters’ terror.
Having read Plebs, I was eagerly waiting for another one of Mr Goforth’s books to come out. This one, With Tooth and Claw, has been a great read. The opening story about a frat party in the woods is not a unique concept, but the author’s writing gives this story an originality, absent in many other books of the same ilk.
There can be no spoilers, but let me just finish by saying As you leave one story, you will want to jump right into the next one, and you will be very pleasantly surprised to find that it is entirely different from the one before, and as wonderful.
A superb collection of horror stories...My personal favourite ‘Apocalypticism’
